Poète, éditeur, cinéaste, acteur, enfant star dans l’Italie mussolinienne, fondateur des éditions The Dead Language Press et de la Paris Filmmakers Cooperative, Piero Heliczer (1937–1993) a été un agent aussi essentiel que secret de la contreculture des années 1960–70. Au fil d’une existence nomade entre Rome, New York, Londres, Amsterdam, Paris et Préaux-du-Perche où il a passé les dernières annéesde sa vie, il a rencontré et travaillé avec une constellation d’auteur.e.s d’avantgarde,tissé des amitiés avec des figures de la Beat Generation et du British Poetry Revival comme de la scène artistique new-yorkaise. À la croisée de nombreuses expériences de l’underground, son nom apparaît par rebonds dans les ouvrages consacrés aux artistes, cinéastes et poète.sse.s qu’il a fréquenté.e.s au cours de sa vie – Gregory Corso, Barbara Rubin, Andy Warhol, Jack Smith, Ira Cohen… – ou sur le Velvet Underground, groupe à la création duquel il a participé avec son ami Angus MacLise.

Cette légende occulte le fait que Piero Heliczer était avant tout un poète. Son oeuvre poétique, mal connue, est d’autant plus difficile d’accès qu’Heliczer lui même ne l’a jamais rassemblée : elle s’est éparpillée ou perdue au fil de ses errances. Heliczer a travaillé à la circulation de ses oeuvres au lieu de se soucier de leur archivage, s’attachant à la production de formes mobiles – chapbooks broadsides et autres ephemera ne sont pas faits pour aboutir à un livre –, disséminant ses vers dans des revues, et privilégiant la lecture publique. C’est précisément cette oeuvre dispersée que Piero Heliczer : Poèmes & Documents veut tenter de rassembler. Ce livre reproduit les contributions de Heliczer à une trentaine de magazines et revues parues entre 1958 et 1979 afin de donner à lire un ensemble – non exhaustif – de ses poèmes tels qu’ils ont paru dans différentes publications d’avant-garde, revues d’artistes, magazines d’étudiants et autres projets éditoriaux. Il s’agit de compléter le travail qu’avaient effectué Anselm Hollo et Gerard Malanga avec A Purchase in the White Botanica : The Collected Poetry of Piero Heliczer (New York : Granary Books, 2001), et à faire circuler davantage l’oeuvre de Heliczer en proposant pour la première fois un recueil de ses poèmes traduits en français.

Poet, editor, filmmaker, actor, child star in Mussolini’s Italy, founder of The Dead Language Press and of the Paris Filmmakers Cooperative, Piero Heliczer (1937–1993) was an essential yet secret agent of the 1960s and ’70s counterculture. In the course of his nomadic existence in Rome, New York, London, Amsterdam, Paris, and Préaux-du-Perche, where he spent the last few years of his life, he met and worked with a constellation of avant-garde writers, forged friendships with figures from the Beat Generation and the British Poetry Revival as well as the New York art scene. At the crossroads of many underground experiences, Heliczer’s name appears in books dedicated to the artists and poets he collaborated with during his lifetime—names by the likes of Gregory Corso, Barbara Rubin, Andy Warhol, Jack Smith, Ira Cohen, or The Velvet Underground, a band he participated in creating with his friend Angus MacLise.

This myth obscures the fact that Piero Heliczer was first and foremost a poet. Today, this part of his work is overlooked; it is all the more difficult to encounter because Heliczer himself never collected it. So it was scattered, or lost, in the course of his wanderings. Heliczer favored the circulation of his works rather than their archiving: he was committed to the production of mobile forms—flyers, broadsides, and other ephemera—disseminated his verses in magazines, and preferred public readings and performances to the finished form of the book.

The present volume gathers a significant number of Heliczer’s poetic works through facsimile reproduction of his contributions to more than thirty periodicals—mostly stemming from poets’ presses or universities—published between 1958 and 1979. This collection isn’t “complete”—but it makes available again poems that, in some cases, never circulated after their initial publication. Piero Heliczer: Poems and Documents seeks to complement the anthology, A Purchase in the White Botanica: The Collected Poetry of Piero Heliczer, edited by Anselm Hollo and Gerard Malanga (New York: Granary Books, 2001), and also to circulate his work among a larger audience, thanks to its first translation into French.
